Program Overview

Qualified professionals, or volunteers in their third or subsequent year of medical or nursing school.

Paramedics, EMTs, and CNAs are also welcome, although you’ll be volunteering in general practice clinics or hospitals rather than your specific field.

What to Expect and How You’ll Make an Impact:

Healthcare Accessibility: Provide essential support in medical facilities serving vulnerable populations in Arusha. Observe and assist in healthcare delivery in a developing country, gaining valuable experience.

Medical Outreach: Participate in twice-weekly campaigns in local villages, offering basic medical care to those without regular access. Volunteers will be escorted by a registered nurse, a social worker, and a local team staff member for translation.

Location

The program is based in Arusha, a small city near the Serengeti and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Despite its attractions, many Tanzanian communities lack necessities. Volunteer projects help improve access to healthcare, education, and childcare in rural and urban areas around Arusha.

Arrival and Orientation

Orientation begins on the 1st and 15th of every month.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) the day before orientation. Airport pick-up is included in your fee. Orientation covers essential information about Tanzania, including customs, language lessons, safety, travel opportunities, and project details.

Volunteer Schedule Example

First Day:

Escorted to the project and introduced to the staff.

Weekdays:

07:30 AM: Breakfast

08:00 AM: Travel to placements

1:00 PM: Work ends, free time for shopping or sightseeing

6:30 – 7:30 PM: Dinner

Weekends:

Explore Tanzania’s wildlife, markets, Mt. Meru, Maasai, and Meru tribes, or take a short flight to Zanzibar for beaches. Save time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation and WiFi

Volunteers stay in dorm-style houses or homestays in Sakina, Arusha, with basic living conditions, running water, and electricity. Meals are provided, and a SIM card for local data is recommended. Additional accommodation can be arranged for $35 per night.

Meals

Enjoy three meals a day featuring Tanzanian cuisine influenced by Indian flavors. Meals include rice, ugali, chapatti, beans, and fresh fruit. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with prior notice.

Important things to note

A Registration Fee of $329 and a 5% international banking fee apply. Independent volunteers under 18 have an additional $80 per week for extra logistical support.
